Caught Reading

I'm always on the lookout to catch people reading and enjoying books! Pick up a good book and see if you can get caught.

Library Award

The Library Award is presented to the elementary class that had the best record for returning library books for the month.

We believe that seemingly small accomplishments like taking care of borrowed items and returning them when expected, demonstrate responsibility and organizational skills that will ease the passage through school and on through life.

WINNING CLASSROOM FOR APRIL 2010 -- GRADE 5/6 kept the award in Division 2!

ABORIGINAL CULTURE DISPLAY

A wonderful display is making its rounds of the Pembina Hills schools courtesy of Mrs. Olson and the Westlock FCSS. A canvas teepee set on a "Turtle Island" carpet displaying many of the symbols used by North American aboriginal tribes gave library classes an excellent opportunity to learn about many aspects of Aboriginal cultures.

Students enjoyed handling many animal puppets representing First Nations' spiritual tokens. Books included with the display were augmented by those from the library's collection.

News and Notes

    • May 10. It's getting to that time of year. Everybody's getting restless for the summer break. I'm gearing up for inventory and so want to get the word out that the deadline for returning library books is June 14th. That does not include text books that are still required for final exams, but everything else must be back to the library by then. Parents, please help your children locate any missing items before that. If the books is lost and must be paid for, know that your money will be fully refunded if the book is found within the next 2 years.
    • Mar. 18 The Book Fair was a success. I should have the final results tallied on Monday - watch the link on the left side of the page - but we will definitely have many new books for the library and will be able to hold another author visit next October. Thanks to the many volunteers who made it happen and the community for coming out to support it. I still have several copies of Scholastic's Guide to Family Reading. Feel free to drop in to pick one up, or you can download it from the Links button on the school's main page.
  • Mar.9 The Book Fair will now be open to the public for a few extra hours all next Wednesday afternoon - from noon right on through 8:00 p.m. Tuesday stays the same: 4:00 - 8:00 p.m.
  • Mar. 1 For Book Fair this year I'll be recruiting a 'Student Crew'. Any student between Grades 6 & 12 who is interested in helping to promote, set up, decorate, run and take down the fair is invited to a meeting tomorrow after school in the library. Any parent or community member who would like to help out can phone, drop in, or email me through the link below.
  • Feb. 26 The results are in and we surpassed last year's numbers for the M.S. Read-A-Thon. Congratulations students! Check out the results link on the left of this page for winners and photos.
  • Feb 22 - The Scholastic Book Fair is coming March 16 & 17th. Watch for details!
