“Coding is today’s language of creativity,” according to Canadian computer scientist, Maria Klawe. “All our children deserve a chance to become creators instead of consumers of computer science.” Computer pioneers Bill Gates and Steve Jobs, along with many others, believe everybody should learn to program a computer because it teaches them to think.
Junior and Senior High students from Swan Hills School had a chance to get a taste of the programming world, when a former student, Madison Marriott, offered a Coding workshop.
A number of students participated, nearly three-quarters of whom said they would continue to code in the future. An even larger percentage felt they had learned something meaningful, and most would recommend coding to others.
Computer Programming is currently one of the fastest growing occupations, and computer science literacy is required for many math and science-related jobs. For those students who are interested, Robotics and Coding are currently offered as options for Junior High.
