Character Trait of the Month – Perseverance

Never giving up, even when things get difficult.

ADMINISTRATOR’S MESSAGE

After a few false starts, it seems Spring is now with us. Students are becoming more active and able to engage in many of the seasonal outdoor activities – remember the sunscreen. Badminton, the last indoor school sport of the year, will be wrapping up soon, and I am pleased to say we had many strong competitors from both junior and senior high this year. Track & field tryouts and training are in the near future, and many of our local athletes are eager to get going.

At this time of year, classes are moving into the final units of each course and, for some grades levels, provincial achievement exams are rapidly approaching. Part A of both Language Arts 6 and 9 were written May 8th; grade 9 Social Studies students write a field test this month; and the balance of PATs and Diploma Exams are scheduled for the latter half of June. In the weeks leading up to exams, teachers will be working with students to review the curriculum outcomes from the courses they have taken this year, and I know students are enthusiastically looking forward to writing their exams….

It may be a little early to be looking at the next school year, but it is important to know that Pembina Hills Public Schools will continue with the focus on literacy, numeracy, and addressing student diversity in the 2018-2019 school year. The district will continue supporting schools in their work with students, with a focused approach on priorities in each division and grade level. Staff professional development in the coming year will be increasingly specific in aiding and supporting the work we do with your children.

I encourage everyone to get outside to enjoy the May weather and, as always, contact me if or when you have questions, concerns, or news to share. Have a great Spring.

Cool Camp is a mentoring program for Grade 8 students. The two-day program provides students with information that will assist them in making wise and informed choices regarding their personal development. The program helps students recognize and explore strategies to resist various social pressures including sexual involvement.  Although protection from disease and pregnancy is covered throughout the program, the emphasis is always on abstinence.
