CHARACTER TRAIT OF THE MONTH – Kindness

ADMINISTRATOR’S MESSAGE

Welcome back to school, student, staff, and parents. I hope everyone has had a good September as well worked hard to get everything into place and begin moving forward. This year, mine appears to be the only new face on staff, as all others have been with Swan Hills School for at least a year or longer. I am very happy to have joined Swan Hills School, and I have enjoyed getting to know many people in the school and in the community.

I think we have launched the new school year with a lot of enthusiasm. The back-to-school-barbecue successfully brought in the majority of our school population with their families. We already have several field trips, volleyball games, and varied school events under our belts as we move into the 2nd month, and the calendar is already quite full for the next several weeks. Option classes have been selected to appeal to a wide range of interests and have been running for several weeks, with students engaged in woodworking, cooking, art, art & design, recreational studies, film studies, robotics, and science exploration.

On the educational front, our province, district, and school, continue to face budget restrictions. Although there are now, and will be in the future, various challenges arising, we will continue to offer high levels of quality core instruction as well as opportunities for students to explore interests and possible careers. An advantage of High School Redesign is that Pembina Hills high schools can offer outcome based learning which is not tied to specific hours of instruction. This allows students the potential to complete additional courses within the same time frame, and provides schools additional possibilities for blending programming.

We are looking forward to a busy and exciting year. I hope parents and other community members are able to work with students on upcoming educational and extracurricular activities, and to join us in celebrating our achievements.

STUDENTS AFTER SCHOOL

Please be reminded that students who do not have after school commitments must leave the school or be picked up by 3:45 as there is no supervision after that time.  We have had some issues with students found either walking the hallways or being outside alone, and this creates a safety risk for them.  Thank you in advance for your attention to this matter.

clockDAYLIGHT SAVINGS TIME ENDS

Do not forget to “fall behind” and turn your clock back one hour on November 5 at 2:00 am so that you are on time the morning of November 6.

STUDENT DROP OFF/PICK UP

Please do not enter the staff parking lot to drop off or pick up your children. It creates a hazard for our students as they are entering and leaving the school. Please do not park your vehicle in the drop off zone in front of the school. The congestion that this creates is a safety hazard for our students and our bus driver is having difficulty parking. Be aware the Bylaw Officer is now enforcing the bylaw.

DEMOGRAPHIC INFORMATION

You will be receiving Demographic Verification Forms with your child. This is a two paged sheet.  Make sure you complete both sides.  Please check over the current information.  If any changes are required, correct the information in the “Corrected Information” column. Please SIGN and date the front side of the form stating that you have received and changed all of the information.  Along with the Demographic Verification Form you will also need to complete a FOIP from and Elements at Risk form.
